I never thought a series could feel like it was watching me as much as I was watching it, but “His & Hers” did exactly that. It started innocently enough, I just wanted a quiet weekend, something to binge. I had heard the buzz about this Netflix limited series starring Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal, and I thought, why not? Maybe I enjoyed it even more because I’m a journalist myself and I love the investigation angle of journalism, the layered storytelling felt like my world, only heightened for drama.
Returning to the Past: Anna Andrews’ Journey
The story centers on Anna Andrews, a former news anchor whose life had quietly unraveled after the tragic death of her infant daughter, Charlotte. Anna is raw, human, and painfully relatable, her career had stalled, her life lost its spark and she’s just trying to exist.
Anna finally returns to her hometown and when she hears about the murder of Rachel Hopkins, a former friend from high school, she decides to cover the investigation. At first, it seems like a professional decision, a way to revive her career, but it quickly becomes clear that this journey is about more than a story, it’s a return to the ghosts of her past.
Anna’s hometown is full of memories, secrets and old friendships that left deep marks. Walking through familiar streets, seeing familiar faces, Anna is reminded of a life she once had, a circle of friends and a girlhood shaped by both joy and pain.
Anna also finally reunites with her mum, who had cared for her child before her passing, only to find that she now suffers from dementia, causing her to wander the streets unclothed.
Jack Harper: The Detective and the Estranged Husband
Then there’s Jack Harper, the detective assigned to the case and Anna’s estranged husband. Watching their interactions is like reading a diary of unresolved feelings; tension, regret, familiarity. I found myself holding my breath during their scenes, rooting for them even when the tension suggested they might drift further apart.
A Murder Mystery with a Twist
The plot unfolds in a way that kept me guessing at every turn, more friends from Anna’s past start dying under mysterious circumstances. Helen Wang, another member of their old clique, is murdered, followed later by Zoe, Jack’s sister. Each victim bears a disturbing signature, a friendship bracelet, that hints at a personal motive.
Flashbacks reveal the dynamics of their high school group, including Anna, Rachel, Helen, Zoe, and a girl named Catherine who had been bullied and ostracized.
At first, I suspected Catherine or Lexy, as she had reinvented herself, was behind it all. Anna discovers a shocking truth after she follows Catherine’s husband to Catherine’s family house, she discovers that Catherine is, in fact, Lexy, who had been bullied relentlessly for her weight. Catherine attempts to shoot Anna, but Jack intervenes just in time and saves Anna while Priya, a cop working with Jack fires a decisive shot, which kills Catherine while her husband is arrested for being an accomplice.
The Shocking Truth: Anna’s Mother
In the final episodes, the real mastermind is revealed; Alice, Anna’s own mother. She had been pretending to suffer from dementia, hiding her true intentions. Alice orchestrated the murders of Rachel, Helen, and Zoe, motivated by a damaged sense of protection and revenge. She discovered that a traumatic incident during Anna’s youth involved these friends and had negatively impacted her daughter’s life.
In Alice’s mind, she was correcting the past, removing those who had harmed Anna, and in her twisted way, she believed she was protecting her daughter. Her clever cover-up, relying on her age, allowed her to act undetected.
Reconciliation and Ambiguity
By the end of the series, Anna and Jack reconcile, they adopt Zoe’s daughter, Meg, and Anna prepares to welcome a new life while uplifting her career. Yet, the series doesn’t give the neat closure I expected, Anna reads her mother’s confession, and their shared look conveys love, guilt, and the cost of Alice’s actions.
When the final episode ended, I just sat there staring at my screen, not because I was confused, but because I needed a moment to breathe. His & Hers is not just a crime story, It’s a story about how the past never really leaves us.
By the time the truth finally came out, it didn’t just shock me, it hurt. The biggest twist wasn’t just who did it, it was why. It was realizing how love can become dangerous when it turns into obsession and how protection can turn into destruction. It made me think about the people in my life, the things I would do for them, and where the line should be drawn.
