Goodluck Ebele Jonathan — former President of Nigeria — was in Guinea-Bissau leading an election-observation mission when the military seized power, suspended the electoral process, and closed borders. (TheCable)

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speaking through spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that Jonathan and his delegation — which included Mohamed Chambas — were evacuated by a special flight and are now safe, having left the country without incident. (Nairametrics)

In solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and urged the military leaders to respect the will of the people and ensure the safety of all election observers and detained officials. (TheCable)

As the region watches anxiously, the swift evacuation of Jonathan offers a measure of relief — but the coup remains a stark reminder of the fragility of democracy in parts of West Africa.
