Overrated or Just Me? Popular Trends I Seriously Don’t Understand

You ever scroll through your feed, see something everybody is raving about, and just go, “Wait… am I missing something?” Because same.
Don’t get me wrong — I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. If something brings you joy, more power to you. But sometimes, I sit with my cup of tea, staring into the void (aka TikTok), and wonder how some trends became the thing.
So today, I’m sharing a few wildly popular things that just don’t click with me. Maybe it’s me. Maybe it’s the simulation glitching. Let’s find out.

1. Mildly Flavored Sparkling Water (Yes, LaCroix, I'm Looking at You)
People swear by this stuff. Like it’s the nectar of hydration gods. But to me? It tastes like someone whispered the name of a fruit into a bottle of carbonated water and called it a day.“Is that… mango?”Nope, just the ghost of a mango.”
2. NFTs and the Whole “Own This JPEG” Movement
I tried to understand. I read the articles, watched the explainers, and even nodded like I got it when friends talked about digital ownership. But deep down? I'm still that confused person going, “Wait… can’t I just screenshot it?”It’s like Tamagotchis for adults, but with less fun and more crypto confusion.
3. Wearing Winter Coats in 25°C Weather for ‘The Aesthetic’
No judgment, but how are y’all not melting? I see influencers rocking full trench coats in broad daylight like it’s the middle of December, while I’m sweating in a t-shirt just watching them. The fit? Immaculate. The practicality? Nonexistent.
4. Spicy Food Popular Trend
I love a good jollof rice with some kick, don’t get me wrong. But eating something that feels like lava and then filming yourself crying for views? That’s… a choice. Why are we punishing our taste buds for likes? What did they ever do to us?
5. “Clean Girl” Aesthetic When It Takes 3 Hours and 12 Products
I admire the glow. I do. But calling a full-beat face “no-makeup makeup” feels like a personal attack on those of us who still think primer is something you paint walls with. Let’s be honest — it’s not “effortless,” it’s “Instagram effortless.” There’s a difference.
6. Obsession with Multitasking
Why did we decide that doing 5 things at once is a flex?“Just finished a Zoom meeting while meal prepping, replying to emails, journaling, and doing Pilates.”Meanwhile, I’m here feeling like a superhero if I fold my laundry and listen to a podcast. Let us rest, please.
So… Am I Alone Here?
If any of these are your jam — no hate at all. That’s the beauty of popular trends: they’re meant to be loved by some and leave others scratching their heads.
But sometimes, it’s just nice to know you’re not the only one on the outside of the hype train, waving politely as it zooms by.
What’s your “everyone loves it but I don’t get it” thing? Let’s talk about it in the comments — no judgment, just curiosity.
