Why Depression Looms in the Air During December

Dear reader, have you ever wondered why so many people tend to be very depressed and frustrated when the festivities of December starts? It's like a reset button for many. For some who still had an anchor of hope, believing that something good can still happen before the year runs out, at some point, they start getting frustrated because the end of the year is in sight.
December is a very special month. It not only marks the end of the year, but it is a revelation of laziness, hard work, resilience, determination and inconsistent.
Picture this; From January 1st, so many people go on and on about the New Year's Resolution. Some even go as far as writing them down. However, as days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months, that same fervency for personal growth and development starts to wear off. It's like a mask being peeled off, only to reveal the true person behind it.
Some people create routines that they wish to follow, some set financial goals they wish to accomplish before the year runs out. Some declare that the new year will steer them to meet their spouses. Unfortunately for many, they fall off the road. They faint and they give up, expecting magic, only to be disappointed in December.
Also, some people set unrealistic goals and expectations. They think because there are 12 months in a year, things will align perfectly when the time comes.
I like to see the month of December as a reality check. It reveals all your errors, shortcomings and hastiness. That is why in this month, people tend to feel lonelier. They believe they should be reaping the rewards of hope, but hope alone doesn't make things work. You need to put in the effort. They forget one important detail which is consistency. Even nature rewards those who are consistent. It doesn't always come easy to stay consistent but discipline works for that.
So what's the catch?
Well, if you're already in that mode of hopelessness and frustration. Relax. It is only the end of the year, not the end of the world or the end of your life. Do not let yourself drown in misery while others enjoy the beauty of the season, after all, it only comes once in a year. Life is full of surprises, and no one can predict them.

Nothing can be achieved through worrying, so sit back and enjoy the season the best way you can. Let go of the pressure. If there are people expecting much from you this season and you know you can't meet them at the point of their needs, let them know.
Do not over cloud your judgement with worrying. Focus on this moment and plan strategically for the new year. 2026 is just a few weeks away and there should be adequate plans to conquer the new year. Enjoy this season with the little you have. With friends and with family. Savour every moment of the festivities, and do not let the negativities get to you.
Forget about the societal pressures of showing off. If you couldn't get what you wanted in 2025, you can always try again in 2026, but with a little more precision and consistency.
Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year in advance.

What were your expectations in 2025?
