The convoy of former minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, came under attack on Friday along the Ubima–Omuanwa road in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Amaechi, who previously served as Governor of Rivers State, was reportedly on his way to his hometown, Ubima, to formally register as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at his ward when the incident occurred.
The visit was meant to mark his official participation in the party at the grassroots level. However, the journey took a dramatic turn when gunmen allegedly attempted to ambush his convoy along the road.
The attack created tension among supporters and residents in the area, especially given the political significance of the visit.
Security Operatives Repel Gunmen
Reports indicate that security operatives attached to Amaechi’s convoy quickly confronted the attackers. The security team was able to overpower the gunmen before the situation escalated into a more serious confrontation.
Their swift response helped prevent what could have been a major security incident. No casualties were immediately reported following the attempted ambush.
However, details about the attackers, including their identities and possible motives, remain unclear. The Police are yet to provide an official explanation about who may have carried out the attack or why.
Earlier Attacks in Ubima
The convoy attack was not the only disturbing development reported in Ubima that day.
Earlier on Friday, unidentified individuals reportedly set parts of the ADC office in the community ablaze. The incident caused damage to the building and raised concerns among party members in the area.
In addition to the attack on the party office, Amaechi’s family house in Ubima was also reportedly targeted. Although details about the extent of the damage remain limited, the incidents have heightened concerns about possible political tension in the community.
The series of events has led many observers to question whether the attacks were coordinated attempts to disrupt political activities in the area.
As of the time the incident was reported, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, had not responded to calls and text messages seeking comments about the attack.
This means that several details surrounding the incident are still unclear, including the identity of the attackers and whether any arrests have been made.
Security agencies are expected to investigate the situation and provide more information as events unfold.
Growing Concerns Over Political Tension
The attack on Amaechi’s convoy, alongside the earlier incidents involving the ADC office and his family house, has raised concerns about the level of tension surrounding political activities in parts of Rivers State.
Political gatherings and party activities are expected to increase as preparations for future elections gradually take shape.
For many observers, the incident highlights the importance of maintaining peace and ensuring adequate security during political engagements.
As investigations continue, attention will remain on how authorities respond and whether those responsible for the attacks will be identified and held accountable.
